My Ride with D

3 years ago this month I started a career that I continue to love so passionately. I have always wanted to express how thankful I am that I'm in a very artistically rewarding and creative career because of the help of a person who believed I had what it takes to make it in the industry. I have always had the passion to go after what I wanted even if it meant failing. So, I decided to leap. After almost 10 years in the retail industry I gave up my retail career and went for the career that I dreamed of ..make up artistry. I emailed established make up artists in the industry at that time and only ONE replied.. Denise Go. My first experience apprenticing was a television commercial for SMART Communications. I was so scared and intimidated with the advertising world that my knees were shaking. Denise was friendly and she gave me pointers. She gave me a model to do and I was surprised she gave me the task to do on my own. After the shoot she then pointed out the things I could improve on. Denise claims that she can't teach but I think she's a great teacher. She never held my hand or instructed me how to do any specific thing. She let me observe and ask questions, she told me who to watch out for, she introduced me to the people that mattered and she always introduced me as a co-make up artist and never as an apprentice. Her way of training was exactly what I needed. There was a time I stepped on a few toes and I didn't want to apologize because I stood by my opinion. I remember her telling me sternly " Mitch, it doesn't matter if you think you're right, you are starting a career where you need these people to like YOU, for them to HIRE you" it took a few minutes to sink in. I realized she was right. The path of my career wouldn't have been the same without her. I do not claim to have had it made because I'm still a struggling freelance make up artist but now I feel that I am armed and equipped with the knowledge that will help me survive this industry, anywhere in the world. Thanks D... looking forward to our future "rides".
